 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

KAHC, Troop  Medical Clinic 1 and Mosier TMC early closure, July 31  

KAHC and the two outlying Troop Medical Clinics will curtail services July 31, 1-4 p.m., to allow staff to attend a quarterly commander’s call and training session. The clinic will reopen in the late afternoon (4 p.m.) for ancillary services.    

To reach the pediatric or adult on-call KAHC medical provider when the clinic is closed, including weekends, holidays and after 4:30 p.m. on regular work days, please contact the Administrative Officer of the Day at 804-734-9000.  All Kenner patients must obtain a referral before seeking care at an urgent care center or other network provider.   

For an emergency, dial 9-1-1 or report to the closest emergency room.

Kenner Family Medicine Clinic Limited Hours - August 1 

All patients assigned to the Kenner Army Health Clinic, Family Medicine Clinic will have limited access to care on August 1. The Family Medicine team providers and staff are set to reopen their newly renovated clinic. It was renovated to improve efficiency and support team-based care, a hallmark of the Patient Centered Medical Home model. KAHC Limited Availability August 21  

Patients at Kenner Army Health  Clinic will have limited access to care Aug 21 to allow staff to participate in mandatory  clinical training.  

The Wilkerson Pediatric Clinic and both Troop Medical Clinics will curtail services from 10:30 a.m. to noon.  

The Family Medicine and Active Duty Clinics will be closed for pateint care on August 21.

To reach the pediatric or adult on-call KAHC medical provider when the clinic has curtailed services, contact the administrative officer of the day at (804) 734-9000.  All Kenner patients much obtain a referral before seeking care at an urgent care center or other network provider.

KAHC Organization Day and Labor Day Holiday Hours 

Kenner Army Health Clinic, Troop Medical Clinic 1 and Mosier Consolidated Troop Medical Clinic will curtail services at 11 a.m., August 28, for its annual Organization Day.  The main clinic and the Mosier TMC will reopen on August 29 with normal services and operating hours. Troop Medical Clinic-1 will be closed August 29. 

All Kenner Army Health Clinic facilities and services will be closed Labor Day, September 1.  

To reach the pediatric or adult on-call KAHC medical provider when the clinic is closed, including weekends, holidays and after 1630 on regular work days, please contact the Administrative Officer of the Day at 804-734-9000.  All Kenner patients must obtain a referral before seeking care at an urgent care center or other network provider.

TRICARE Service Center Walk-In Service No Longer Provided 

As of April 1, 2014 you will need to used TRICARE's convenient self-service options.  The "I want to..." section at www.tricare.mil is your gateway to:  enroll in or purchase a plan, file or check a claim, view referrals and prior authorizations, find a provider, change your primary care provider, see what's covered, compare plans, and manage prescriptions.  You may also get enrollment assistance and answers to questions through Health Net Federal Services, 1-877-TRICARE (1-877-874-2273) or by visiting www.hnfs.com

Limited Clinical Services and Appointment Line Availability, 3rd Thursday Afternoons

Kenner Army Health Clinic clinical services and appointment line availability will be limited on the 3rd Thursday afternoon, (1 to 4 p.m.) of each month.  This does not include ancillary services such as pharmacy, laboratory, or radiology.

Our clinical staff, to include providers and nurses, will be participating in training and development requirements during this time.

We will resume normal operations the following Friday morning.

Both times that I got a prescription filled, the ticket says 25 minute wait, however the actual wait has been 45 minutes to 1 hr 15 minutes.  It would be helpful for a realistic time estimate or to speed up the process.

Kenner Response:  The queuing system calculates an approximate waiting time. It looks at the number of people already in the queue and how long they have waited.  It then prints the approximate waiting time at that moment.  But that can change quickly and dramatically based on the time of day, staffing, the number of windows serving patients, the number of RX's a patient has to process and the complexity of therapies.  Consequently, the approximate waiting on each ticket could vary greatly, and is, as indicated, and estimate. We would put our patients at risk for adverse events if we concentrate on speed and not accuracy.  We are always looking for ways to improve. Thank you for your feedback!

Patient After-Hours Phone Number
Patients periodically noted difficulty reaching (or waiting a long time to get an answer) at our AOD desk after hours.  A recommendation was made to get an additional phone line setup and retrain the personnel manning the phones.
 
Kenner Response:  In cooperation with the Garrison NEC, Kenner has now been able to get two new phones placed at our AOD/Information Desk (734-9000) with built-in roll-over capability for multiple inbound calls.  Additional phone features now allow our AOD to put one call on hold and respond to additional simultaneous inbound calls.  Thank you for your feedback!
Kenner Child Policy
We received concerns from many parents about our child policy restrictions for patient appointments.  Kenner Army Health Clinic (KAHC) understands that military spouses are often in the challenging position of having their spouses away or deployed, and some find it difficult to find and/or pay for childcare. 
 
Kenner Response:  We have heard your concerns and changed our child policy for patient appointments!  Kenner now allows children to attend appointments with their parents.  Please understand that 1)  No more than two children may attend with the parent, 2) No children are allowed during procedures or during behavioral health appointments, and 3) If the child misbehaves and is not controllable by the parent, the provider retains the right to terminate the encounter and ask the parent to reschedule. Pharmacy Services

The change at the pharmacy for obtaining refill prescriptions is creating unnecessary hardships on both the pharmacy and patient. Please go back to going to one window for refills that have been called in without having to take a number. This system worked great and there was hardly ever any wait time at all.

Kenner Response:  You do not need a ticket for a refill. We discontinued that practice about a week ago.  Window #7 is the refill window.

If you have called in your refill (or completed on-line) 72 business hours or more in advance, your medication should be waiting for you. Thank you for your feedback!

I went to the Primary Health Clinic, at Kenner Medical Clinic and requested a blood pressure on myself. I was informed that a doctor had to request a blood pressure test. Please let me know if this policy exist and explain the purpose of the policy.
 
Kenner Response:  You ask a very good question. Kenner Army Health Clinic does not provide simple blood pressure screenings on a routine basis to the public. We are not currently staffed to break away to address any issues that may come up with abnormal blood pressure findings in a screened beneficiary, to include nutritional and life-style counseling and, potentially, urgent treatment/referral for severe derangements.
 
As much as Kenner would like to provide this kind of public screening service routinely, we can currently only support it on special occasions when we can dedicate the proper staff to address the above issues (such as health fairs).  Thank you for your feedback!
Pharmacy Services
I recently went to the Fort Lee KAHC Pharmacy to pickup my wife's prescription. I am the military member therefore the sponsor as well. When I arrived at the check-in desk the female there asked for my ID card and the prescription letter. With the prescription being for my wife she wanted to see my wife's ID and said without it I couldn't recieve her medicine for her. She said that it was a HIPAA violation without the ID. If that being the case wouldn't it be a security violation for me to carry her ID around. I know for a fact that I and many others have recieved family members prescriptions before. Wouldn't that be one of the reasons of having a computer system to verify family members info. Also, in my children's cases, how is one to get medicine for them when they don't have ID's. My recommendation is the personnel there should all be on the same page and be more helpful. Gas and time is expensive and I don't like wasting either.
 
Kenner's Response:  The Kenner AHC Pharmacy does require the patient's ID card in order to process a prescription/refill pick up. A HIPAA violation would result if Pharmacy staff allowed  the script to be filled and picked up without proper identification.  In the future, we recommend that beneficiaries picking up scripts for family members have a copy of the dependant's ID card (front and back), with them to prelcude this from happening again!  All DEERS-registered beneficiaries 10 years of age and older require their own ID card (or a copy of it) for their medications to be picked up. Pharmacy Services
I received a defective inhaler from the Kenner pharmacy.  The pharmacy staff told me to contac the manufacturer for a replacement.  The manufacturer told me to contact the dispensing pharmacy.  What should I do?
 
Kenner Response:  I want to apologize for your less than optimal experience during your visit.  The staff member you spoke with should hav etaken back the defective units and given you new ones from a different lot.  We have a process in place to contact manufacturers and report such issues and have reviewed it with the pharmacy team.  Thank you for your feedback about your visit to the KAHC Pharmacy and your concerns about your inhalers.

Recently my child was seen in the Wilkerson Pediatric Clinic for a routine exam.  My childs records are kept at Kenner and his PCM is a Kenner provider.  The provider ordered a prescription to be picked up at the Kenner Pharmacy.  When I tried to pick the prescription up, I was told I needed my child's ID card in order to verify eligibility.   I would like to know under what circumstances my child would not be eligible for the prescription.  My child's records are there at Kenner and is also enrolled in DEERS, yet in order for me to pick up the prescription I was made to fill out a promissary note and required to make yet another trip to the Pharmacy in the next thirty days to present my child's ID card.  This is a seemingly reasonable policy carried to the extreme.  I also did not see a policy notice posted anywhere informing of this requirement.

Army Medical Clinics in General
This comment is directed to Army Medical Clinics in general.  When I go to my appointment for my medical issues, the problem doesn't get resolved.  they only do the bare minimal of treatment and that doesn't resolve the medical issue.  So, that means I continue to come back to the clinic to set the same results, more medication
 
Kenner Response:  We are sorry that you are less than satisfied with your care within Army Medicine.  Please keep in mind that occasionally a tough medical problem may require several visits to address while multiple issues may require more than one visit.  Resolution or the cure may not be possible nor necessarily be the goal.
 
Army Medicine and KAHC are excited to introduce the new initiative called the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH).  This model places a stronger emphasis on creating a health care team (provider, nurse, technician) that develops a relationship with each patient.  The goal is for patients to get to know their team, and to interact with the health care team regularly, which can also be by phone and secure messaging in addition to office visits.  We  want patients to actively participate in their health care, and for the health care team to meet all of a patient's needs.

Family Medicine Clinic
At the end of my appointment I was given a hand out and told, I should lose weight and it would help resolve my knee issue.  I have had issues with my knee when I weighted 120 pounds.  The provider was rude, even after I told him I eat healthy and not processed foods, his response was "well you can eat 2000 calories of lettuce a day, and it's still 20000 calories."  I do eat 2000 calories a day, because I breastfeed my daughet, and was told to consume 300-500 more calories a day to accommodate the breastfeeding. Before passing illogical judgements on patients this provider might want to get the full history before implying someone is FAT.
 
Kenner Response:  We are sorry about this negative interaction between you and your provider.  We are committed to having our providers be as sensitive as possible to their patients' concerns, while maintaining the frankness necessary to sustain a trusting, productive provider-patient relationship.
 
Women definitely need to maintain a healthy weight and diet after having a baby, especially if they are breastfeeding.  One issue of recent ntional focus is on recognition of overweight and obese. The most recent data publishied in the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm) is scary.  Nearly 7 out of every 10 Americans over age 20 are overweight or obese (69.2%), definied as a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25.  For an adult who is 5'9"tall, a weight of 169 pounds or more is in this category.  It is clear from the data, that Americans may not all take maintaining a healthy weight seriously, and we hope to help Kenner patients appreciate how important that it is to maintain overall health.

Pharmacy Services
The Pharmacy needs to accept prescriptions from providers/doctors electronically since they are required by Medicare to be provided electronically.  My doctors do not want to write hard copies of prescriptions
 
Kenner Response:  We are not allowed by TRICARE and Department of Defense to accept electronic prescriptions due to security concerns. This applies to all military pharmacies. Unless the rules change, our Kenner pharmacy is bound by them. Perhaps in the future, these rules will change.
Outside providers who see MEDICARE patients are required to use an electronic system for writing scripts in order to reduce errors related to poor handwriting. For us to accept an electronically generated prescription, we need a hand-written signature on the script.  This is law by the State of Virginia.
Please let your provider know of our requirements.  I will have my team reach out to all providers in the network to reinforce these requirements. Hopefully we can minimize further inconvenience to you.
